Parliament raises alarm over India-Pakistan conflict’s potential impact on Nepal

May 9, Kathmandu: In Friday’s House of Representatives session, lawmakers voiced serious concerns about the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan and their potential effects on Nepal. They urged the government to prepare for challenges related to security, the economy, and supply chains.

MPs stressed need to combat terrorism amid the India-Pakistan conflict, calling for an assessment of potential impacts, including security risks, economic dependency, supply chain disruptions, and the safety of Nepalis in western India and Pakistan. They highlighted risks such as geopolitical pressure, diplomatic imbalances, open border challenges, cybersecurity threats, and impacts on aviation, tourism, and trade.

To address risks from the open border, lawmakers emphasised strengthening border security forces, internal security measures, cybersecurity, and emergency preparedness as per the National Security Policy. They also demanded immediate action to evacuate 80 Nepali students in Pakistan who have requested rescue and sought a briefing in the House on the government’s assessment and preparedness regarding the India-Pakistan situation.

On Thursday, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release urging India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to de-escalate tensions and ensure regional stability.
