On Air Station:

International Mother Language Day today!

February 21, Kathmandu: The International Mother Language Day is being commemorated worldwide, including in Nepal, on Wednesday, with various programs organized to mark the occasion.

Since 2000, February 21 has been designated as International Mother Language Day following a declaration by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1999.

The inception of International Mother Language Day stems from the initiative of Bangladesh, to pay homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the right to speak in their mother tongue.

This initiative was endorsed during the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has since been observed globally.

The theme for the 2024 celebration of International Mother Language Day is “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning.”

Nepal, too, has been observing International Mother Language Day since 2000.
