Transforming postal service into govt courier being implemented effectively: Minister Dr Timilsina

Kathmandu, Oct 9: Minister for Information and Communications, Dr Bikram Timilsina, has informed that the government’s plan to develop postal service into the government courier service is being implemented effectively by making it modern and citizen-friendly.
At a philatelic exhibition organised by the Department of Postal Service on the occasion of 152nd World Post Day, Minister Dr Timilsina mentioned that the government was committed to taking the postal service to the access of general people by restructuring it to suit citizens’ needs.
Stating that it was necessary to link postal service with modern life by keeping its historic importance intact, the Minister underlined, “It holds a special historical value. We must change it into a modern, practical and citizen-centric service.”
Postal service could be developed as an effective medium to take government services to citizens’ doorsteps by utilizing the nationwide postal network, he reminded.
On the occasion, new postage stamps were issued, remembering the contribution of individuals who played vital roles in nation building and development of global technology.
The Department issued the postage stamps of Rs 10 bearing the images of Bise Nagarchi, Wange Sarki, Kulbir Thapa Magar, Karna Bahadur Ranamagar, among others. Communications Minister Dr Timilsina affixed the first cancellation mark on the postage stamps.
Similarly, chairperson of the National Dalit Commission, Devraj Bishwakarma, mentioned that issuance of postage stamps, bearing the image of Nagarchi and Sarki shows that that state has honoured the historical contribution of Dalit community. The postal service bears relevance even in the era of rapid development of information technology, he added.
Communications secretary Rajendra Kumar Poudel also emphasized the need of making postal service an effective medium of expansion of public services. He opined that there is a need of cooperation and healthy competition with private sector.
Director general at the Department of Postal Service, Man Maya Bhattarai, viewed irrespective of the tech-dominated world, postal service carries significance.
