Landslide obstructs roads: Woman gives birth on the way to health post

Baglung: A 25-year-old woman gave birth to her baby on the way to the nearest health post after landslides blocked the road at Badigad rural municipality of Baglung district.

Sarita Thapa, a resident of Badigad rural municipality-3, went into labour and was being carried in a doko (traditional bamboo basket) to Sisakhani Health Post when she delivered the baby on the roadside.

Female community health volunteer Tara Thapa shared that Sarita’s family had sought her help at around 2:00 pm on Saturday after the expecting woman began experiencing labour pain. However, the health volunteer could not reach the family’s home as the road had been obstructed by floods and landslides.

Much to the dismay of the family of the expecting mother and the health volunteer, the means of communications such as internet and cell phone services were also unavailable at that time.

Thus, on Sunday morning, the family carried Sarita in a doko towards the health post but she went into active labour before they could reach the facility. Sarita then gave birth along the way, Tara recalled.

Both the new mother and newborn are reported to be in normal condition. They have since been safely taken home, said health volunteer Thapa.
