29th memorial day of Ganesh Man Singh being observed today

Kathmandu, Sept 18: The 29th memorial day of Ganesh Man Singh, a prominent leader of Nepal’s democratic movement and the Supreme Commander of the 1990 People’s Movement, is being observed today.

The Nepali Congress, its sister organisations and various well-wishers are organising programmes to commemorate Singh, who died on Ashwin 2, 2054 BS.

Born on Kartik 24, 1972 BS, in Chhetrapati, Kathmandu, Singh became involved in the struggle against the Rana regime as a member of the then Praja Parishad. He escaped from Bhadragol Jail before 2007 BS and later went to India, where he established a political partnership with B.P. Koirala.

Singh subsequently led the Nepali Rashtriya Congress, founded in 2003 BS, and played a significant role in the 2007 BS revolution that established democracy in Nepal. He also participated in the armed struggle from the Birgunj front.

After Nepal’s first general election in 2015 BS, Singh served as a senior minister in the government. Following the political takeover in 2017 BS, he was imprisoned for eight years at Singhadurbar and Sundarijal.

After being released from Sundarijal Prison along with B.P. Koirala in 2025 BS, Singh continued political organising while in exile. He returned to Nepal with Koirala in 2033 BS under the policy of national unity and reconciliation and remained actively involved in the movement against the Panchayat system.

Singh is widely remembered for his role in Nepal’s democratic struggle, particularly his leadership during the 1990 People’s Movement.
