Bhotekoshi floods: 1,395 dead bodies retrieved

Kathmandu: The number of people confirmed dead in the Bhotekoshi floods has reached 1,395, while 5,130 persons are still missing since the devastation.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Monday shared that data showed that 364 dead bodies were collected from Chitwan, 232 from Nawalparasi East, 222 from Nawalparasi West, 202 from Nuwakot, 186 from Rasuwa, 77 from Gorkha, 72 from Dhading, and 38 from Tanahun. Two people injured in the disaster died in Kathmandu while receiving treatment.

Of the total bodies found so far, 104 were identified. DNA profiling and tests are forwarded to identify the remaining bodies.

According to NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat, as many as 13,737 people have been rescued since the catastrophic floods. Among the rescued ones, 1,499 were from Nuwakot, 825 from Rasuwa, and 94 from Dhading districts.

Nineteen health facilities have provided medical services to 341 persons injured in the disaster. Among them, 278 have been discharged after treatment. The number of those seeking health care services from various security agencies stands at 9,358.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health and Food Safety has mobilized 150 counselors in the disaster-hit areas. So far, 45,238 persons have received counseling through 166 community awareness programmes facilitated by the Nepal Police, according to Mahat.

Joint efforts are underway for the relief distribution and management of essential services to the people displaced by the floods. Security agencies, local levels, and various government and non-government agencies are working actively for the search of the missing persons, treating the injured ones and distributing relief materials.
