Nepal has not rejected foreign assistance, needs support for reconstruction and tourism: Foreign Minister Khanal

KATHMANDU, Aug 29 — Minister for Foreign Affairs Shisir Khanal has strongly refuted reports claiming that Nepal has turned down international support following recent catastrophic flash floods, clarifying that the nation actively welcomes global assistance, particularly for long-term reconstruction and economic revival.

Addressing media representatives today, Foreign Minister Khanal addressed media reports circulating both nationally and internationally that suggested Nepal had declined external aid.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that reports alleging Nepal had rejected international assistance were entirely false. He clarified that given the immense scale of devastation, support and assistance remain vital for immediate rescue and relief efforts, and even more so for the upcoming phases of reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Highlighting that a detailed needs assessment is currently underway across affected critical infrastructure, road networks, and hydropower facilities, the Foreign Minister noted that specialized international assistance is already active on the ground. Specialized technical reconnaissance teams from India and China have been mobilized for complex operations, including tunnel rescues, while relief materials continue to arrive from international partners, including India, China, Japan, and Australia.

In addition to direct rehabilitation support, Foreign Minister Khanal emphasized that one of the most effective ways the international community can support Nepal’s recovery is through tourism and economic engagement.

He urged international travelers not to hesitate to visit, reassuring potential visitors that the country remains largely open for tourism. He pointed out that major destinations—including Pokhara, Lumbini, Chitwan, Janakpur, and most mountain regions—remain safe and accessible. He added that while the country is experiencing deep grief, its borders, supply chains, and general infrastructure continue to operate smoothly.

The government reiterated that foreign nationals and organizations wishing to assist can also contribute directly to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund through secure online platforms as full-scale recovery efforts continue.
