Flood risk continues to persist in Bhotekoshi

Kathmandu: The Flood Forecasting Division has stated that the flood-induced risk is still persisting in the Bhotekoshi area in Rasuwa.

Although water levels are currently normal in Bhotekoshi and Trishuli, there is a risk of outburst of lakes formed by blocked rivers in the upper regions.

In view of the risk, the Division has urged people not to move near the riverbanks and to pay attention to early warning information.

Binod Parajuli, a flood expert from the Division, informed RSS that the size of the lake formed by the blocked river at the flood site has increased, posing a risk of bursting.

He cited preliminary analysis of information received from the Chinese government and satellite images to make the assertion.

“The lake formed by the blocked river is growing, and there is a risk of its bursting. If the lake bursts, rocks, soil, and debris could roll down with the water and cause sudden flooding in the downstream areas,” he said.

“Although the flow of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers is currently below alert levels after the flood in Bhotekoshi, we have urged a high alert in the downstream areas. If the flood risk increases, we will issue early warnings.”

Considering this risk, the Division has advised residents, travelers, and rescuers in the downstream areas of Bhotekoshi to stay away from riverbanks and other hazardous areas until further notice. RSS
