Speakers stress need to modernize Radio Nepal’s legal awareness program

July 8, Kathmandu: Officials and communication experts have called for restructuring Radio Nepal’s long-running legal awareness program, Kanunka Kura (Legal talks), to make it more relevant, inclusive, and accessible to the general public.

Speaking at a review session organized by Public Service Broadcasting Nepal, Law Ministry Secretary Parashwar Dhungana highlighted the program’s role as a milestone in simplifying legal information for ordinary citizens.

Secretary Dhungana revealed that the ministry is preparing to draft one hundred and fifty-one new laws in the upcoming fiscal year, noting that the broadcast will be vital in keeping the public informed about these legislative updates.

He emphasized that since informing citizens about the law is a state responsibility, Radio Nepal’s unmatched reach should be leveraged to address the most fundamental legal needs of the populace.

During the discussion, Acting Chief Administrative Office of Public Service Broadcasting Nepal, Aarati Chataut, described the media as a crucial bridge between state legislation and the public, calling Radio Nepal the ideal platform for this mission. She suggested that future episodes feature a broader diversity of legal experts and focus heavily on issues directly affecting grassroots communities.

The sentiment was echoed by Joint Secretaries Hum Bahadur KC, Aruna Joshi, and Udaya Bahadur Rana, who noted that while the program has been effective, it must continue evolving to incorporate pressing contemporary issues and cover all segments of society.

News Division Chief Pawan Pyakurel and Business Division Chief Gopal Thapa further underscored the broadcast’s core philosophy—that ignorance of the law is no excuse—reaffirming Radio Nepal’s commitment to educating the public on state-mandated laws.

Program Coordinator Santosh Regmi presented an overview of the thematic issues and episodes broadcast during the current fiscal year, highlighting the program’s coverage and its ongoing engagement with key legal topics.
