Proposal to consider Anti-Money Laundering Bill passed by parliament

Kathmandu: A second meeting today of the House of Representatives (HoR) passed a proposal seeking consideration on the ‘ Money Laundering Prevention (third amendment) Bill- 2083 BS’.

The Bill brought to replace a related ordinance was presented before the House for a decision following the discussions in principle. It was unanimously endorsed by the meeting.

Anyone wishing for an amendment to the Bill is requested to present the amendment proposal at the Federal Parliament’s Bill Section. Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle floated the proposal, seeking consideration of the Bill.

Stating that the international community is meticulously assessing Nepal’s money laundering issues and the relevant legal amendments have to be made to help the country face challenges in getting out of such a situation, he added that the relevant authorities are working to bring Nepal’s aviation sector out of the European Union’s black list.

He took time to say that no one will be investigated in a selective way, being guided by political motives. Lawmakers Bishwaraj Pokharel, Bidushi Rana, Parasmani Gelal, Aren Rai, Chandramohan Yadav and Gita Gurung were among those taking part in the deliberations.

They stressed that stricter laws should be enforced against amassing of illegal property, an impartial investigation should be carried out into the accumulation of such assets, and effective measures should be taken to remove Nepal from the ‘grey list’ of the Financial Action Task Force.
