Around 2.5 million farmers registered in national database

Kathmandu: Around 2.5 million farmers have been enlisted in the Farmer Registration System operated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment.

According to the Agriculture Information Centre, farmers have been registered online based on details of their land holdings and production with the aim of providing subsidies and other support to boost agricultural output.

Centre official Sanjeev Pandit said efforts are underway to register the remaining farmers, with more than 4.13 million people dependent on agriculture according to the 2021 Agriculture Census.

He said the ministry plans to classify farmers into four categories—subsistence, small, medium and large farmers—after completing the registration process. Farmer identity cards will then be issued and linked to a digital information system.

The identity cards are expected to facilitate the distribution of government support, including grants, chemical fertilisers, seeds and other services.

The ministry has been collecting farmers’ information in coordination with local governments and has urged those yet to register to enlist in the programme.
