World Water Day 2026 being Observed today
Kathmandu, March 22: World Water Day 2026 is being observed today across the globe, including in Nepal, under the theme “Water and Gender” and the slogan “Where water flows, equality grows.” The day highlights the link between water access, sanitation, and gender equality, focusing on how women and girls are disproportionately affected by water scarcity.
On the occasion, President Ramchandra Paudel emphasized the need for cooperation among government agencies, development partners, civil society, and the public to preserve water and ensure its sustainable use and equitable access. He stressed the importance of proportional participation and fair management in all tiers of drinking water governance. “Water is the basis of life, health, prosperity, and social justice. From the earliest civilizations on riverbanks to today, water has shaped human life. Conserving it is increasingly challenging but essential,” he said.
The President also highlighted protecting watershed areas to recharge groundwater and promoting traditional water conservation methods, such as building ponds and lakes.
Similarly, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav called for effective state policies to ensure equitable distribution and access to water. He pointed out the declining groundwater levels in the Tarai-Madhes region and drying springs in hilly areas, urging collective action. “Water conservation is not only an environmental issue but also a question of national survival and future,” he said.
Since 1993, March 22 has been observed as International Water Day by the United Nations to raise public awareness on the importance of water and its sustainable use. This year, Nepal is marking the day with awareness programs emphasizing the critical role of water in promoting gender equality.
