SC summons Chief Secretary to discuss garbage management

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has issued an order, summoning the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, to hold a discussion on waste management in the Kathmandu Valley.

A division bench of Justices Dr Kumar Chundal and Mahesh Sharma Paudel ordered the high-level government officials including the Chief Secretary, Secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Secretary at the Ministry of Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, and chief administrative officers from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Lalitpur Metropolitan City and Bhaktapur Municipality to appear before the court on March 24.

Separate writ petitions were filed by advocate Padam Bahadur Shrestha on behalf of the Effort Lab, and by advocate Bikram Mishra, making defendants to the Environment Ministry.

In the writ petitions, the advocates drew the court’s attention to the challenges of waste management in the Kathmandu Valley and demanded a court order to the concerned government offices for effective and sustainable waste management.
