10 points Karnali Declaration on Disaster Risk Preparedness and Response

Karnali, Aug. 20: With top emphasis on humanitarian assistance and the development of resilient structures and systems, a 10-point Karnali Declaration on Disaster Risk Preparedness and Response was issued for disaster resilience in the mountain region.

The Declaration was issued on Tuesday after a two-day-long national conference organized on the occasion of the “World Humanitarian Day-2024” in Birendranagar of Surkhet.

The Declaration has pledged the coordination and cooperation of the federal, province, local governments and development partners in policy formulation and implementation while ensuring meaningful participation of the vulnerable communities in disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and response and rehabilitation. Likewise, the Declaration has stated the promotion of the effectiveness in the relief distribution through a one-door system in a coordinative manner.

Stating that the agriculture sector, which is a foundation of Nepal’s food system, has faced serious obstructions in the time of the disasters, it has emphasized on the promotion of indigenous crops and effectiveness of the agriculture insurance schemes. Mentioning that the climate change impacts as challenges, it has called for making a strong statistic system along with the risk assessment for the loss and damage.
