166 Killed in 3,435 Disaster Incidents Across Nepal in Four Months

Kathmandu, July 20: Natural disasters claimed the lives of 166 people across Nepal over the past four months, with thousands of families affected by a wide range of disaster-related incidents, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The Authority reported that 3,435 disaster incidents were recorded between mid-April and mid-July, leaving 166 people dead and 988 others injured. A total of 6,531 households were affected during the review period.

Fire incidents accounted for the most disasters, with 914 cases reported. Other major incidents included 535 snakebite cases, 495 landslides, 478 storms, 229 lightning strikes, 190 animal attacks, 171 floods, and 166 heavy rainfall-related incidents. The Authority also recorded 55 cases of altitude sickness, four hailstorms, two avalanches, one boat capsizing, and four other disaster-related events.

In addition, 191 forest fire incidents were reported during the same period.

The Authority said disaster risks remain high during the ongoing monsoon season. In the 24 hours between July 18 and 19 alone, 58 disaster incidents were reported across 45 districts, resulting in three deaths and injuries to 13 people.
