Nation lost prominent intellectual and democratic watchdog : NC President Thapa pays tribute to late Dr. Devendra Raj Pandey

July 18, Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed deep condolences following the passing of prominent civil society leader, economist, and former Finance Minister Dr. Devendra Raj Pandey, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the nation.

Dr. Pandey passed away on Friday evening at the age of 87 at his residence in Bishalnagar, Kathmandu, following a battle with cancer. He had been brought back to his residence earlier that day after receiving treatment at Patan Hospital.

In a statement released on social media on Saturday, Thapa paid homage to Dr. Pandey’s lifelong commitment to civic freedom, human rights, equality, and democratic awareness. The party president emphasized that the country has lost a profound intellectual, a moral leader, and a highly vigilant guardian of democracy.

Thapa highlighted Dr. Pandey’s historic role in mobilizing citizens’ movements against autocratic regimes during the turning points of Nepal’s democratic uprisings, noting that his actions would remain a source of inspiration for the new generation.
