Heavy Rainfall Forecast Across Nepal; DHM Urges Public to Stay Alert

Kathmandu, July 13: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country today and tonight, warning of an increased risk of monsoon-related disasters.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, monsoon winds remain active across Nepal, while the monsoon trough is positioned slightly north of its average location near the Terai, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

The Division said light to moderate rain is already occurring in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, with isolated rainfall also reported in Madhes and Sudurpaschim.

During the day, most areas of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are expected to remain mostly cloudy, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim will see generally cloudy conditions. Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many hilly and Terai areas, while the high mountainous regions may receive moderate to heavy rain or snowfall.

The forecast indicates that heavy rainfall is likely at several locations in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, including parts of Madhes. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue tonight, with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Koshi, Bagmati and Madhes, and heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

The Department has urged people living in flood- and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow weather updates. It warned that intense rainfall could trigger floods, landslides, inundation and soil erosion, while also disrupting transportation, agriculture, tourism, mountaineering and other daily activities.
