Energy Consumption, Export Strategy Report Submitted to Minister Shrestha

Kathmandu, April 23: A report outlining Nepal’s future energy consumption and export strategy has been presented to Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha.

Titled ‘Energy Consumption Growth and Export Strategy–2083 BS’, the document aims to position the energy sector as a key driver of economic transformation. The report was prepared by a high-level study committee led by Joint Secretary Sandip Kumar Dev, in line with the government’s 100-point governance reform agenda endorsed by the Cabinet on March 27.

The strategy proposes a long-term plan to boost electricity exports by first increasing domestic energy consumption. It highlights the need for major reforms in transmission and distribution systems, with a goal of achieving full household electrification.

The report also recommends reducing reliance on LP gas by promoting electric appliances and improving the efficiency of meters and transformers. At present, Nepal’s per capita energy consumption is around 450 kilowatt hours, with projections indicating it could reach 1,500 kilowatt hours within the next decade.

In the transport sector, the strategy prioritizes the adoption of electric vehicles and calls for the expansion of charging infrastructure across the country.
