Nepal Commemorates People’s Movement Day, Marking Restoration of Democracy
Kathmandu, April 9: Nepal is observing People’s Movement Day today, with various programs organised to honour the historic day when democracy was restored in the country.
The day marks the end of the 30-year Panchayat system, which was introduced by King Mahendra on Poush 1, 2017 BS, and concluded on Chaitra 26, 2046 BS. The system was overthrown through a joint people’s movement led by the Nepali Congress and the Left Front, paving the way for the restoration of multi-party democracy.
The movement, led by Nepali Congress leader Ganeshman Singh, lasted for 50 days, beginning on Falgun 7, 2007 BS. Following the movement, King Birendra addressed the nation and formally announced the reinstatement of the multi-party system on Chaitra 26, 2046 BS.
Today’s celebrations pay tribute to the collective efforts of the people who played a pivotal role in bringing democratic governance back to Nepal.
