Communication Minister Dr. Timilsina applauds Radio Nepal’s vital role in strengthening democracy
Kathmandu: Radio Nepal has observed its 76th anniversary today.
Addressing a program to mark the anniversary in Sinha Darbar this afternoon, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, said Radio Nepal has played an important role in establishing and institutionalizing democracy in the country.
Communication Minister Timilsina stated that the scope and influence of radio have evolved over time, adding that journalists and staff also have a responsibility to protect and strengthen the institution.

He stressed that Radio Nepal’s key role is to support democratic values by disseminating truthful and reliable news. Recalling his earlier association, he said he had contributed literary works to Radio Nepal, which encouraged him to pursue writing.
Minister Timilsina noted that Radio Nepal has nurtured many creative individuals and contributed to the country’s progress. He said the media has a significant role in nation-building by informing citizens about national developments and direction.
He emphasized that honesty and responsibility among employees and journalists would strengthen the institution, which in turn would contribute to national progress. The Communication Minister urged all to work in a way that builds hope and trust among the public.

Stating that people closely monitor those in leadership and responsible positions, he called for greater accountability and active engagement in duties. He added that lack of honest efforts has slowed progress, and stressed that integrity can lead to overall national improvement.
On the occasion, Secretary at the Communication Ministry, Laxmi Kumari Basnet, said Radio Nepal needs to adapt to technological changes. She informed that Radio Nepal currently reaches around 94 percent of the population and stressed the need to maintain credibility through accurate and reliable news.
Similarly, Executive Chairman of Public Service Broadcasting Nepal, Dr. Mahendra Bista, said Radio Nepal has reached its present stage overcoming various challenges. He expressed confidence that ongoing transitions towards public service broadcasting would gradually ease existing challenges.
He also highlighted the need for capacity building of journalists and staff and reaffirmed commitment to support the government’s goal of national development.
