BP Highway Traffic Halted After Flood Sweeps Away Road Section

Kavrepalanchok, March 29: Vehicular movement along the BP Highway has been completely suspended after flooding in the Roshi River washed away sections of the temporary road.

The District Police Office, Kavrepalanchok, enforced a traffic halt from Saturday night following damage caused by the flood on Friday evening. Around four kilometres of diversion road between Chowkidanda and Nepalthok in the Roshi area have been swept away.

Authorities had planned to reopen the road with temporary repairs in coordination with the Department of Roads, the Traffic Police and residents. However, continuous rainfall on Saturday hindered restoration efforts, said Superintendent of Police Komal Shah.

The Division Road Office, Bhaktapur, reported that the damaged section is part of an 18-kilometre diversion built after last year’s floods and landslides destroyed the original Chowkidanda–Nepalthok stretch. Ongoing rain has made reconstruction work difficult, according to Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh.

In a related incident, one person died after being swept away by the Roshi River flood on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Kunsang Tamang of Roshi Rural Municipality-7, who was working on the highway.

Police said seven others trapped by the flood near Chowkidanda were rescued. The flood also swept away a motorcycle and an electric vehicle.

Traffic police had already begun stopping vehicles from Friday evening at key entry points, including Kavrebhanjyang, Bhakunde, Nepalthok and Mangaltar, after the road became impassable at multiple locations.
