18 die of tuberculosis in Bajura over five years

Bajura, March 24: At least 18 people have died from Tuberculosis in Bajura over the past five years, according to data made public by the District Health Office on Tuesday, marking World Tuberculosis Day.

The records show one death in the fiscal year 2077/78, three in 2078/79, two in 2079/80, six in 2080/81, four in 2081/82, and two more in the current fiscal year 2082 (till mid-March).

In 2081/82, a total of 141 tuberculosis cases were reported in the district. At present, 81 patients are undergoing regular treatment, said Information Officer Kumar Neupane.

Among the district’s nine local levels, Badimalika Municipality has the highest prevalence, with 219 cases per 100,000 population.

Former FNJ Bajura chairperson Prakash Singh stressed the need for stronger public awareness campaigns and community-level screening, stating that the figures highlight a serious concern. He urged authorities to adopt result-oriented measures at the local level.

Chief of the District Hospital, Dr Chandra Shekhar Yadav, said tuberculosis should not be treated as a disease discussed only on special occasions, but as a major public health issue requiring sustained intervention.
