Trekking guides now mandatory for travel to restricted areas, says Immigration Department
Kathmandu, March 24: The Department of Immigration has reminded travellers and agencies that hiring trekking guides is mandatory for visits to restricted areas in 13 districts across Nepal.
The Department stated that prior approval is required for trekking in these restricted regions. For foreigners travelling in groups through agencies, trekking permits are now issued quickly and efficiently via an online system.
Director and Spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal said contact numbers have been provided to assist applicants facing technical issues, and individual trekkers can also now apply for permits to visit restricted areas.
Applications must be submitted through an agency, which is responsible for assigning a trekking guide and managing all rescue operations in case of emergencies. A single trekking guide can lead up to seven trekkers per group, with permits granted accordingly.
Foreign nationals may also apply for permits from their home country using their visa application number. The Department noted that this measure aims to promote tourism, create employment, ensure the safety of trekkers, and streamline trekking services in Nepal.
