Election Commission intensifies voter education ahead of HoR polls

Kathmandu, Feb 22: With just 11 days remaining before the House of Representatives elections, the Election Commission Nepal is continuing its nationwide voter education campaign to boost participation and minimize invalid votes.

The program, running from February 15 to March 1, has deployed one volunteer in each of the 6,743 wards across 753 local levels. Volunteers are visiting communities and households, educating voters on the importance of their voting rights and the proper voting process using sample ballot papers. Local focal points have also been appointed to monitor the campaign, with orientation sessions for volunteers already completed.

In addition, the Commission is actively monitoring the dissemination of false information, hate speech, and violations of the election code of conduct. The Information Ethics Promotion Unit under the Election Information Dissemination and Coordination Center is overseeing these efforts in collaboration with regulatory agencies.

So far, 290 content creators who shared harmful or misleading information have been reported to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for action under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. Eleven individuals have been recommended for action to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, 65 to the Press Council Nepal, and one under the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2076.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent, fair, and informed electoral process. RSS
