Gyalpo Lhosar festival being marked today; President Paudel says Festival fosters harmony


Kathmandu: The Gyalpo Lhosar, the cultural festival of the Sherpa community, is being marked by organizing different programs.

The festival is observed as the New Year by the Sherpa community.

The festival is marked in 22 districts in the country. The festival is celebrated with gaiety and fervor from Shukla Pratipada to Purnima.

President Ramchandra Paudel has said festivals foster harmony and fraternity among people from diverse communities.

Giving a message of best wishes on the occasion of Gyalpo Lhosar today, President Paudel reminded that festivals like Gyalpo Lhosar help us create and enhance unity, socio-cultural solidarity, tolerance, and fraternity. He expressed belief that the festival would ultimately reinforce national unity.

The Head of State wished peace, prosperity, and happiness to all Nepali sisters and brothers in the country and abroad on this occasion.

According to him, the Gyalpo Lhosar is celebrated as the New Year by the Sherpa community of the Mahayan Buddhist sect settled in the mountainous region of Nepal.

Similarly, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has extended best wishes on the occasion of Gyalpo Lhosar today. He wished the festival would inspire everyone to work for national prosperity.

The Gyalpo Lhosar, 2153, being observed as the New Year, helps us reinforce religious reverence, social harmony, cultural glory, and national unity. He further wished peace, progress, and prosperity on this occasion.

The festival builds intimacy in family, friends, and community, he said in the message, adding that the cultural events held on Gyalpo Lhosar reflect a rich diversity of Nepali society.

The festival is not only limited to the Sherpa community but also extended as a common festival of the entire Nepali society, the Vice President reminded.

Yadav further said the preparation of special cuisine also shows the protection of indigenous food and culture.

A special delicacy made up of nine species of grains called ‘guthuk’, and ‘khapse’ are prepared and eaten during this festival. The New Year greetings are also exchanged.

The government has given a public holiday today. RSS
