UN Resident Coordinator Yahia Presents Credentials to PM Karki
Kathmandu, Feb 9 — Newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator to Nepal, Lila Pieters Yahia, presented her letter of credence to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Monday.
Yahia submitted the credentials during a courtesy meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar. She formally assumed office following her appointment by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and approval from the Government of Nepal.
Prime Minister Karki congratulated Yahia on her appointment and wished her a successful tenure in Nepal. During the meeting, the Prime Minister briefed the UN official on the government’s efforts to restore normalcy after the Gen-Z movement of September 8 and 9, emphasising the administration’s commitment to peace, democracy, and stability.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the continued support of the United Nations and the international community in Nepal’s peace process, development initiatives, and democratic transition. She informed that preparations for the House of Representatives election are in the final stage, while the investigation commission formed to probe incidents during the Gen-Z movement is close to completing its work.
Stating that the interim government was formed amid significant challenges, PM Karki said restoring peace, security, and the rule of law had been the top priority, which the government managed to achieve within a short time. She added that cautious steps were taken to prevent further conflict and ensure a free, peaceful, and credible election, now nearing completion.
Expressing confidence in continued UN cooperation, the Prime Minister said future UN programmes should align closely with Nepal’s national priorities and development needs.
In response, UN Resident Coordinator Yahia congratulated PM Karki for steering the country through a difficult phase and extended best wishes for the successful conduct of the March 5 House of Representatives election.
“It is an honour to lead the United Nations team in Nepal at this crucial time,” Yahia said, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to working with the Government of Nepal on key priorities including peace, social inclusion, youth employment, and climate action.
