On Air Station:

Winter rainfall remains absent across Nepal, causing unease to farmers: DHM

January 4, Kathmandu: Nepal has recorded no significant rainfall during the ongoing winter season, according to the latest winter rainfall monitoring report released by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

The report, published today, shows that the average winter rainfall recorded at 20 meteorological stations across the country is zero millimetres, indicating an extremely dry winter so far.

The analysis compares daily accumulated actual rainfall with the 30-year normal winter precipitation. While the normal pattern suggests gradual accumulation during winter, the observed data shows that rainfall since December 1, 2024 has remained far below average at all monitored stations.

According to DHM, the winter season spans December 1 to February 28. Winter rainfall is crucial for winter crops, groundwater recharge, and water availability, particularly in the hills and mountains.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged dry winter conditions could adversely affect agriculture, increase forest fire risks, and reduce soil moisture if the trend continues in the coming weeks.

The department noted that rainfall statistics may change if future precipitation occurs, but as of now, winter precipitation across Nepal remains negligible
