Nepali Congress pro–special convention group demands convention on January 11–12

January 2, Kathmandu: A faction within the Nepali Congress advocating a special general convention has demanded that the party hold the convention on January 11 and 12.
At a press conference in Kathmandu, leaders of the pro–special convention group urged the party’s Central Committee to take an immediate decision in favor of convening the special general convention.
Nepali Congress leader Devraj Chalise said the party has failed to hold its regular general convention due to disruptions in the pre-announced schedule, leaving a special convention as the only viable option.
Chalise expressed confidence that the party leadership would fulfill its responsibility to organize the special convention on the proposed dates. He also clarified that the group is not in favor of a party split.
Following the failure to conduct the regular general convention as scheduled, party General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma have been preparing to postpone the regular convention and instead hold a special one on January 11–12.
Citing the changed political context following the Gen Z movement, the leaders said the party cannot move toward upcoming elections with the existing policies and leadership, making a special convention necessary.
