Old Democratic Parties to Lead Government: UML Chair Oli

Kathmandu, Dec 30: CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has asserted that only the UML and the Nepali Congress (NC) are capable of leading the government in the coming days, dismissing claims and agreements made by other political forces regarding the prime ministership.

Speaking at a thought seminar organized by the Madan–Ashrit Memorial Foundation on Tuesday, themed around the message of the UML’s 11th national congress and current political direction, former Prime Minister Oli criticized what he described as informal and unrealistic power-sharing deals. “The post of Prime Minister cannot be distributed anytime and anywhere,” he remarked, taking a swipe at recent political maneuvers.

Oli said his party would not be influenced by alliance-building efforts among other parties, emphasizing that established and major democratic forces like the UML and NC would continue to lead the country. He also stressed that the reinstatement of Parliament remains the UML’s top priority to resolve the prevailing political deadlock.

UML Vice-Chairperson Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ said leftist and democratic forces must move forward together to protect democracy and national interests.

Meanwhile, NC leader Min Bishwakarma expressed concern over what he called selective attacks on leaders of major traditional parties following the Gen-Z movement in early September. UML leader Pradeep Kumar Gyawali echoed the need for UML–NC cooperation to safeguard democracy.

UML central member and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol said the recent national congress had infused new energy into the party by encouraging interaction between senior and younger leaders.
