NC should contest elections only after holding general convention: Gagan Thapa

December 22, Kathmandu: General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said the party should participate in the upcoming elections only after holding its 15th general convention

Addressing party cadres and voters in Kathmandu Constituency No. 6, Thapa said that if it is not possible to hold a regular general convention in time, the party should conduct a special general convention before entering the elections.

He accused some leaders of deliberately prolonging meetings of the party’s Central Committee with the intention of delaying the general convention.

Thapa stated that the House of Representatives election, scheduled for March 5, is crucial to bringing the constitution back on the right track. “The primary responsibility of the Nepali Congress is to safeguard and correct the constitutional process,” he said.

He added that the party must take the lead in ending corruption and mismanagement in line with public aspirations. Emphasising the NC’s role as a national force, Thapa said the party bears a major responsibility in governing the country.

He also stressed that political parties must reform themselves in line with the sentiments and expectations of Gen Z.

Warning of instability, Thapa said the country could face another phase of uncertainty if the election is not held on March 5.
