On Air Station:

Discussion among stakeholders concerning Film Bill

Kathmandu, Nov 23: Filmmakers have emphasized the importance of the Film Development Board functioning independently and autonomously.

In a meeting of the Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly held today, they expressed that as films have recently transformed into both a form of entertainment and a significant industry, the government should prioritize this sector accordingly.

During the committee session, feedback was collected from stakeholders to amend the Film Bill, 2026. Representatives from nine different film production associations, including filmmakers, directors, actors, and producers, provided their recommendations at today’s meeting.

Film director KP Pathak, actor and producer Khagendra Lamichhane, and Samir Balami, the central president of the Film Journalists Association, among others, expressed that Nepali movies should be at a par with other countries.

They urged for a more flexible and accommodating stance from Nepal’s film review board (Censor Board). Journalist Balami pointed out that while there has been a recent increase in revenue generated by films for the state, the government’s investment in the film industry remains insufficient.

Reports compiled by nine organizations linked to the film sector were presented to Chairperson Tulsa Kumari Dahal. Chairperson Dahal requested that the submitted reports be revised as necessary and that the final report be submitted within seven days.

She announced that the Film Bill will be reviewed clause by clause in the statute committee starting from November 25.

Additionally, she indicated that the bill will later be discussed in the National Assembly. She also emphasized that the committee is dedicated to drafting a bill regarding film rights and entitlements, incorporating feedback and suggestions from relevant stakeholders during this time.
