Production of maize increases in Tanahun

Dumre (Tanahun), Nov 20: Maize production in Tanahun district has increased this year, with farmers reporting a smoother cultivation season free from major pest attacks and fertilizer shortages.

According to Kiran Pariyar, Crop Development Officer at the Agricultural Development Office, the district saw consistent improvement in maize output over the past three fiscal years. Tanahun produced 67,150 metric tons of maize from 22,238 hectares in 2079/80, followed by 67,200 metric tons from 22,348 hectares in 2080/81. Production surged in 2081/82, reaching 73,246 metric tons despite a slightly reduced cultivation area of 22,195 hectares.

Pariyar noted that Tanahun is recognized as a key maize-producing region, with Rishing Rural Municipality serving as the district’s primary pocket area for maize seed production. The district is also suitable for cultivating paddy, millet, wheat, soybean, ginger, and is known as a major orange-producing zone.

Meanwhile, a large maize stack at the Darai Community Homestay in Dumsi, Byas Municipality-10, has become a unique attraction for visitors. “Guests are busy taking photos and making TikTok videos in front of the huge pile of maize. This year’s harvest was excellent, and the stack is bigger than ever,” said homestay operator Asha Darai.
