Curfew imposed in Jitpur Simara submetropolis of Bara district

November 19, Kathmandu: The District Administration Office of Bara district has imposed a curfew in Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City from 12:30 PM today, citing rising tensions in the area. Authorities said the decision was taken after clashes escalated between Gen Z youths demonstrating near Simara Airport and groups affiliated with political parties.

According to the administration, the curfew will remain in effect from 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM today. All movement, gatherings, rallies, protests, assemblies, meetings, and similar activities have been strictly prohibited during the curfew hours.

The restricted zone covers a 500-meter area on both sides of the Gandak Nahar–Pathlaiya road section and a 500-meter perimeter around Simara Airport.

Officials said the curfew aims to prevent damage to public and private property and ensure the safety of security personnel and staff. They added that the measure was necessary to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Tensions flared earlier today at Simara Chowk in Ward 2 after a clash broke out between Gen Z youths and cadres of the CPN-UML. The confrontation started around 10:30 AM when information became public that UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and leader Mahesh Basnet were scheduled to arrive in Simara on a Buddha Air flight. Gen Z activists launched a protest, which soon led to clashes between demonstrators and UML supporters.

Locals said the Gen Z group tore down and destroyed a welcome gate prepared by UML cadres. Following the incident, security presence has been significantly increased from the airport area to the main market.
