Government provides relief to 49 families of Gen Z Movement victims
Kathmandu: The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided financial assistance of Rs 1.5 million each to the families of 53 people who died during the Gen Z Movement. Of them, 49 families have received the relief, while distribution to the remaining four is underway.
A recent Cabinet meeting approved Rs 1 million in compensation for each deceased and Rs 500,000 for related expenses including final rites.
The relief, however, excludes prisoners who died while escaping during the protests. Free vehicles and helicopters were arranged to transport bodies to their home districts.
The government has also decided to build a Gen Z Awakening Memorial Park in Kathmandu. So far, 76 people have died in the movement, including 53 civilians and three police officers, while 12 remain unidentified.
A judicial commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki has been formed to investigate the incidents.
Meanwhile, Rs 4.858 million has been released for the treatment of the injured, with Rs 20,000 allocated per person. The Ministry of Health has recorded 2,429 injured individuals and distributed 2,876 identity cards for free medical treatment.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki has instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted care, while discussions are ongoing for the long-term rehabilitation of the injured.
