On Air Station:

Thousands flock to Nepalgunj border from India to celebrate Dashain with family

September 30, Kathmandu: The Jamunaha border crossing in Nepalgunj is witnessing a surge of Nepalis returning home from India to celebrate Dashain. Nepalis working in various Indian cities are flocking back to their hometowns for the festival. The crowd at the border has been steadily increasing since Ghatasthapana, with autorickshaws packed with passengers heading home for the festivities.

Carrying bags and sacks filled with goods, these returnees are brimming with excitement to reunite with their families. Many, who had migrated to places like Kalapahad, Shimla, Prayag, and Kargil for seasonal work, have set aside their toil to celebrate Dashain with joy and enthusiasm.

Dinesh Bista from Salyan shared, “No matter the hardships we face other times, returning home for Dashain to enjoy with family is special.” Police officials stationed at the border estimate that around 5,000 people are crossing daily to celebrate the festival.

To assist the influx of travellers, a passenger help desk has been set up at the border to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Most of the returnees hail from districts such as Dailekh, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Rukum, Rolpa, Salyan, and Pyuthan.
