Nepal needs supports from world community to cope with climate change impacts: VP Yadav

Kathmandu, May 1: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has said that Nepal should get support from the international community to effectively implement the measures to cope with the climate change impacts.

The Vice President said Nepal is facing a climate crisis, even though we are not responsible for the climate change and added that the serious impacts of climate change were visible in the country. “The sources of water in the Tarai region are drying up. And as high as 2 billion people from the river basin areas are likely to be affected directly by the climate change impacts,” Vice President Yadav said at a program in Kirtipur on Thursday.

Likewise, Yadav recalled that Nepal is committed to zero carbon emissions by 2045, for which it needs fiscal and physical assistance from the global community. Also speaking at the event, Acting Chief Justice Sapana Malla Pradhan said that climate change is now a judicial issue.

The judiciary has expressed its sensitivity towards climate change impacts, even by giving frequent verdicts on the management of waste and dead bodies left in the Sagarmatha region. Similarly, Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi said Nepal was facing difficulties in achieving SDGs due to climate change impacts adding that the government is organizing the Sagarmatha Sambaad to draw the attention of the world on climate change.

Likewise, the UN Resident Coordinator to Nepal Hanaa Singer-Hamdy said Nepal is entitled to climate justice.
