Cabinet meeting: Govt. forms 3-member committee for new appointments

Kathmandu, March 24: The government has formed a recommendation committee to nominate the chairperson and members of the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The cabinet meeting held on Monday formed the recommendation committee under the leadership of former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Om Prakash Mishra.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, shared that the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission or a person designated by the Chairperson, former Attorney General Khamma Bahadur Khati, Arjun Karki, and Stela Tamang are the members of the committee.

The committee was constituted based on the discussion held among top leaders of three major political parties on the issue of transitional justice. There is a legal provision that the government should constitute a committee recommending office-bearers in the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Chairpersons and members of both commissions should be recommended within two months after the formation of the recommendation committee.

Similarly, the meeting also formed a committee under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel to recommend a candidate for the position of Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank.

Former Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and economist Bishwo Poudel are the members of the recommendation committee.

Likewise, a delegation under the leadership of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will participate in the sixth BIMSTEC Summit to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 1-5. The delegation also comprises Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, informed Minister Gurung. — RSS
