Top leaders of three major parties to meet today, focus on transitional justice

March 24, Kathmandu: A meeting of the top leaders from the three major political parties is scheduled for Monday afternoon, with transitional justice as the main agenda. This marks the first joint gathering since royalist groups intensified their campaign for the restoration of the monarchy.

The meeting, set to begin at 4 p.m., will see Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ in attendance. Prime Minister Oli’s advisor Agni Kharel confirmed that the discussions would center on transitional justice matters.

The leaders plan to deliberate on the appointment process for officials in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.

Although a committee was previously formed to recommend candidates for these bodies, it failed to submit its suggestions before its term expired. The committee, led by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra, completed steps such as calling for applications, preparing a shortlist, and conducting interviews but fell short of finalizing recommendations for appointments.

Additionally, the meeting is expected to address the rising activities of royalist factions and the role of republican parties in response to these developments, according to reports.
