Achievements and positive changes should not be negated: NC Chief Whip

Kathmandu, March 16: Nepali Congress Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire has urged opposition parties not to create confusion by downplaying the achievements made in the country and the positive changes seen in the living standards of the people.

Speaking during the ‘special time’ in the meeting of the House of Representatives today, he emphasized that a major transformation has occurred since the country adopted the federal democratic republican system. “The country’s development and good governance have been promoted, and hope and confidence are being instilled among the people,” he said.

He alleged that, under various pretexts, confusion is being spread among the people, claiming that nothing is happening in the country under the new dispensation. He urged the concerned parties to stop such activities immediately.

“It is the opposition’s duty to suggest ways of correcting any issues with a bill. Why is there an objection to formulating laws that allow for hemp farming, while many development projects are being hindered by laws related to forests? The opposition parties are responsible for raising their voices on such matters. However, attempts should not be made to mislead the people by promoting narratives that nothing positive has happened in the country or that the country is heading towards doom,” Ghimire said.

The NC Chief Whip stressed the need for investment in infrastructure development, particularly in roads, drinking water, and sports sectors. He pointed out that the private sector has not been allowed to open medical colleges and engineering institutes. He highlighted that it would be difficult for the government alone to operate such institutions and called for attention to this issue.

Lawmaker Ghimire also stressed the importance of working diligently for the country’s development by increasing capital expenditure and preventing the migration of youth. He argued that those who bring in more than Rs 15 billion in remittances should not be overlooked.

“In the past, countries like Japan and Korea sent their citizens abroad for employment. Today, Chinese citizens are found in every country. Tourism has not even earned Rs 100 billion in foreign exchange, and not enough foreign exchange has come from the energy and information technology sectors. But can those who bring in such significant remittances be ignored?” he questioned.

He noted that in the 19 years since the country entered the peace process, Nepali society has undergone significant changes, and the standard of living for the people has improved.

“People’s access to technology has increased, and not only has the system changed, but so has the situation. Therefore, I urge you all not to make negative comments,” the NC Chief Whip concluded.
