Nepal engages diplomatically over Nepali student’s death in India

February 18, Kathmandu: The Nepali government has taken significant diplomatic steps following the death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stated that the government was addressing the issue through diplomatic channels.

Nepal’s Embassy in New Delhi has urged KIIT to ensure the safety of Nepali students and allow them to continue staying in hostels. The Embassy held discussions with KIIT representatives and requested necessary arrangements for students’ accommodation and classes. KIIT has assured that Nepali students can stay on campus and continue their studies.

Nepali Foreign Minister Dr Arzu Rana Deuba said she has been in contact with stakeholders , including Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Sharma, and Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Navin Srivastava. She directed Ambassador Sharma to assess the situation and ensure necessary measures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was actively engaged and will provide further updates.

Meanwhile, The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has expressed condolences and confirmed that local authorities in Odisha have launched an investigation into the incident. It stated that India remains committed to ensuring the well-being of Nepali students studying in the country.
