Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal raises hope for Bipin Joshi’s release

January 16, Kathmandu: Nepal’s diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Nepali student Bipin Joshi, held captive by Hamas, is expected to gain further momentum as a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is set to take effect.

The deal, brokered by Qatar and Egypt, includes the phased release of hostages in exchange for prisoners.

Foreign Minister, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, has been actively engaging with key stakeholders. She recently held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who assured Nepal of Israel’s continued efforts to secure Joshi’s release. Minister Dr Rana also sought Qatar’s support, emphasizing its crucial mediating role in the negotiations.

The ceasefire agreement aims to end 15 months of conflict. It outlines a six-week truce and humanitarian assistance, with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. U.S. President Joe Biden highlighted the agreement’s focus on reuniting hostages with their families.

Joshi, abducted during Hamas’s October 7th 2023 attack on Israel, remains a priority for Nepal. The government’s engagement with both Israel and Qatar reflects its determination to ensure his safe return.
