Karnali’s ginger reaches international market
Kankrebihar (Surkhet), Jan 13: Ginger and turmeric produced in Karnali have found their way to Europe.
A ginger processing industry at Kalidamar of Bheriganga Municipality-5 in Surkhet has started exporting its products abroad. The industry purchases ginger and turmeric from local farmers. It is said there is more demand for ginger in foreign countries than within the nation.
Before this, the ginger produced by local farmers lacked a market, but this problem was gone after the industry started processing ginger and turmeric that it collected from local farmers. Managing Director of the industry Sulochana Shrestha said that ginger produced in Karnali and Lumbini is organic and of quality, and there is high demand for it in Europe for this reason.
“There is no problem with sales as we have started exporting abroad. We buy the produce of the farmers; now we have to move towards increasing the production,” she said. The industry processes 1,500 metric tonnes of ginger and turmeric annually.
According to the company, more than 1,400 ginger farmers are associated with the industry. In the current fiscal year, ginger has been grown on more than 850 ropanis of land. The company aims to purchase 2.2 million kilograms of ginger and send 230 tonnes of dried ginger to Europe. —RSS
