On Air Station:

Discussion begins on PSB contents

Kathmandu, Dec 27: In the wake of the passage of the Public Service Broadcasting Act (PSB Act) and subsequent appointment of a chair at Public Service Broadcasting Nepal, discussion has been launched on what could be the proper content in the transformed media.

The Act has paved the way for the forward transformation of state-run Radio Nepal and Nepal Television into the PSB, calling for stakeholders to create uniformity in content. In this connection, the media persons at Radio Nepal and Nepal Television discussed it on Friday.

The newsroom, structure, and style were dwelt on by them. During the discussion, the Chairman of Public Service Broadcasting Nepal, Dr. Mahendra Bista, suggested the media persons focus on how they could work in line with the PSB objective and policy.

The PSB contents should be centered on people, he reminded. Similarly, the newly appointed officiating chief administrative officer, Bishnu Ram Neupane, said the traditional mindset of news could work no more, so a new approach is imperative.

On the occasion, media expert Raghu Mainali said PSB allows media houses and journalists to orient content towards people. He said PSB warrants a hierarchy break where editorial independence, public accountability, restructuring, and presentation style were some of the essential features. —RSS
