National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal addresses 149th Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union
Kathmandu: National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal has addressed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s 149th Assembly.
Addressing the Assembly today, Chairman Dahal said the theme ‘Harnessing science, technology, and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future’ resonates well with the tune of the world today.
‘The legislature of the world with the constitutional responsibility of making laws and improvising the effective implementation for the benefit of human society must deliver on our mandate,’ said Chair Dahal,’ Particularly, in shaping the development of science and technology, while addressing the associated risks and challenges such as data privacy, cyber security, misinformation and spread of harmful content.’
Similarly, Chairman Dahal said, ‘We should focus on creating an environment for International cooperation and collaboration in research, development, resource mobilization, and youth engagement in the field of science, technology, and innovation while provisioning necessary regulation, to ensure equal access to technology for all.’
The upper house Chair stressed the August Forum of the world’s parliamentarians needs to deliberate on pertinent issues of our time. He said there is a huge divide between and within countries in the capacity development and access to information technology.
Sharing the fact that over 2.6 billion people in the world are still offline, Chairman Dahal urged everyone to work together to overcome these challenges and ensure equitable access to gains of science, technology, and innovation for all.
“The efforts made by the Inter-Parliamentary Union to incorporate AI in its action plan and formulating a new charter of science and technology by creating the working group on science and technology is commendable,’ said Chair Dahal, ‘The development in science, technology and innovation, and its achievements should be viewed as the global good for the benefit of the humankind.’
Chair Dahal suggested, ‘Rising above the narrow nationalism, we can minimize the adverse effects of science, technology and innovation through cooperation, and exchange of knowledge and experiences in this field.’
A nine-member Nepali parliamentary delegation, led by Chairman Narayan Dahal is in Geneva, Switzerland today to attend the 149th Assembly of IPU.
The NA Chair is scheduled to hold meetings with delegations from various countries and with officials of the IPU and the IPU Secretariat on the sidelines of the Assembly.
