41st BP Memorial Day today!

July 22, Kathmandu: Today, the nation observes the 41st BP Memorial Day, honouring the remarkable contributions of the first elected Prime Minister, Bishweshwar Prasad (BP) Koirala, to the nation.

BP Koirala, a towering figure in Nepali politics and literature, dedicated his life to the establishment of democracy in the country. Born on Bhadra 24, 1971 Bikram Sambat (BS) (Sep 8, 1914 AD), he tragically succumbed to cancer on Shrawan 6, 2039 BS (Sep 8, 1914).

Koirala’s political journey culminated in his election as Prime Minister in Jetha 2016 BS, following Nepal’s first-ever parliamentary elections in 2015 BS. He led the Nepali Congress to a resounding two-thirds majority in the 2015 BS general elections.

Apart from his political prowess, BP Koirala also left an indelible mark in the field of literature. His literary legacy includes over one and a half dozen acclaimed creations, such as ‘Tin Ghumti’, ‘Modiaain’, ‘Hitler ra Jew’, ‘Sumnima’, and ‘Narendra Dai.’

The memory of BP Koirala’s tenure as Prime Minister and his significant contributions to the nation’s development and democracy took a darker turn on 1st Poush 2017 BS.

At that time, the popularly elected government was overthrown by the then King with the assistance of the Royal Nepali Army. Koirala, along with other prominent leaders like Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Ganeshman Singh, was subsequently imprisoned in Singha Durbar and later transferred to Sundarijal prison.

To honour his legacy, the Sundarijal prison has been transformed into the BP Museum, a repository of important artefacts and mementoes from BP Koirala’s life as both a politician and a literary figure.

On this occasion, various events and programs are being organized by the NC party office, its sister organizations, and the BP Museum Committee.

Additionally, the prestigious BP Koirala National Award will be presented at Sundarijal on Saturday, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation.

The 41st BP Memorial Day serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of BP Koirala’s vision, leadership, and literary contributions, resonating with the nation and its people as they reflect on his profound influence on Nepali history and democracy.
