Nepali documentary “Co-husband” wins awards in Japan and Canada

May 2, Kathmandu: The Nepali documentary “Co-husband,” directed by Ganesh Pandey, has received two prestigious awards simultaneously in Japan and Canada. The documentary portrays the fraternal polyandry system in Nepal.

In the 5th Meihodo International Youth Visual Media Festival held in Kyushu, Japan, “Co-husband” won the bronze award and $1000, among 3,533 submissions from 122 countries. The festival celebrated Pandey’s film by awarding him an additional USD 100,000 under the Film Funding title, which he will use for his next documentary project.

The documentary, which runs for 35 minutes, also won the Best Award at the Gateway International Film Festival in Ontario, Canada. The director, Ganesh Pandey, expressed his pride in winning such a significant cash prize for a Nepali documentary. He felt that it was an achievement not only for himself but also for the whole country and all Nepalis.

Pandey had spent two challenging months in Humla district to shoot the documentary, making the award all the more rewarding for him. He expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his hard work, and the awards are a testament to the exceptional filmmaking skills of Nepalis.

The “Co-husband” documentary has gained recognition and respect globally, and its awards in Japan and Canada have put Nepal’s documentary film industry on the world map. This significant achievement has opened doors for other Nepali filmmakers to showcase their talents and bring global recognition to their work.
