Covid-19 infection surges in Nepal; Omicron variant the main culprit

April 4, Kathmandu: Nepal is seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases attributed to the seasonal cold, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.
In addition, the Omicron XBB 1.16 variant has been found in neighbouring countries and has been identified in all 24 samples tested by the National Public Health Laboratory in Nepal.
The Omicron variant is known for its high transmissibility, and as a result, the government is calling for multi-sector support and coordination to prevent the further spread of the virus.
Dr. Samir Kumar Adhikari, the Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry, released a statement stressing the importance of adhering to public health standards, including vaccination, to prevent the pandemic from getting out of control. The statement emphasized that COVID-19 remains a significant threat that requires constant attention and effort from everyone.
“Individuals must continue following health protocols, such as wearing masks, practising physical distancing, and frequently washing hands. Vaccination is also an important tool that can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization”, Dr. Adhikari said.
The Ministry’s call for multi-sector support and coordination underscores the need for collaboration between various stakeholders to contain the spread of the virus.
