Govt reclaims 302 ropani of land, implementing Rawal Commission’s report

Kathmandu: The government has reclaimed 302 ropanis of land encroached upon in various places.

The retrieval of the land comes as part of the implementation of the report of the High-Level Commission on Investigation and Protection of the Government and Public Land (Rawal Commission), 2052 BS.

The plots of land are recovered from Kathmandu Metropolis-4,5,8,10,12 and 29, totalling 302 ropanis (one ropani is equivalent to 5,476 square feet). Earlier, the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and the General Administration had formed the Report Implementation Committee, coordinated by Chief Survey Officer Ramesh Gyawali, according to the Secretariat of the Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, Pratibha Rawal.

The under-secretaries at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the chief of the respective land administration and survey office, the local-level coordination section chief and officer at the Department of Land Management and Archive, and the survey officer at the Survey Department (member-secretary) are the members of the committee.

It may be noted that in 2052 BS, the Rawal Commission, chaired by the then government secretary Ram Bahadur Rawal, had carried out a study on the status of government and public lands and submitted a report, recommending the protection of land, specifically those encroached upon or registered in the names of individuals. It took a long time for the government to implement the report.
