HoR Meeting: MPs Raise Issues from Medical Education to Road Safety
Kathmandu, October 2: Members of the House of Representatives have drawn the government’s attention to a range of public concerns, including problems faced by medical students, road accidents, farmers’ issues and disaster-affected communities.
Speaking during the urgent hour of the House meeting on Thursday, lawmaker Rahbar Ansari called for action to address alleged problems related to fake doctors and high fees at a medical college in Birgunj. Kshitij Thebe urged the government to remove buffer zones that, he said, have created difficulties for local residents.
Rabin Mahato sought free medical treatment and compensation for a family in Sarlahi after a child was seriously injured by an electric wire. Dhanendra Karki called for measures to reduce the increasing number of road accidents.
During the zero hour, lawmakers highlighted the need to ensure timely supplies of fertiliser and irrigation and fair prices for agricultural produce. They also raised concerns over elephant attacks on farmers in Jhapa, alleged mistreatment of farmers in Rajbiraj and delays in government procurement of hybrid rice despite the price being fixed.
Lawmakers also called for development plans to take account of timeframes, population density and geographical conditions. They raised the issue of girls missing school due to menstrual pain and urged measures to increase government revenue.
Other issues raised included the immediate appointment of a chief administrative officer to Chainpur Municipality in Sankhuwasabha, transparency in public procurement, enforcement of animal welfare laws, methane gas production in Surkhet and relief for disaster-affected citizens.
At the start of the meeting, lawmaker Dhurbaraj Rai urged the House to avoid negative practices seen during the current session and ensure that opposition voices are heard in future proceedings.
