Narayani River flood approaches danger level, all gates of Gandak barrage open

Nawalpur (Nawalparasi): The floodwaters of the Narayani River, which flows through Nawalparasi (Bardghat-Sustapurva), are nearing a critical danger level.

As reported by the water measuring center at Devghat, the river’s water level hit 8.98 meters at 3:00 PM today. A danger level is declared when the water reaches nine meters at this center due to flooding.

A warning level is set at 7.3 meters, and the river surpassed this threshold on Friday night. Chief District Officer of Nawalparasi (Bardghat-Sustapurwa), JagdishwarUpadhyay, stated that residents living along the river banks are being relocated to safer areas. “We are working to move those at risk of flooding to safety, advising them to stay away from the riverbanks,” he explained.

The municipalities of Gaindakot, Devchuli, Kawasoti, Madhyavindu Municipality, and Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality are particularly vulnerable to flooding from the Narayani River.

Additionally, CDO Upadhyay mentioned that Boudikali and Bulingtar Rural Municipality are also at risk of floods and landslides from the Kaligandaki River, and efforts are underway to ensure the safety of affected individuals. He shared that the district’s security agencies are on ‘high alert’ to assist with rescue and relief operations for those impacted by the floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, all gates of the Gandak Barrage, constructed on the Narayani River at Triveni in Nawalpur, have been opened. All 36 gates were opened after the water flow in the Narayani River crossed the warning level.

According to Senior Sub-Inspector Suresh Pal, Chief of the Area Police Office in Triveni, the water discharge at the barrage has currently reached 300,400 cusecs. A discharge of 300,000 cusecs is considered the warning level.

Pal shared that all gates of the Gandak Barrage were opened on Friday night following the rise in the river’s water flow. With the onset of the flood, the flow of water into the canals serving both Nepal and India has been completely shut off.
